Marengo and Belle Plaine Information MARENGO AND IOWA'S IOWA COUNTY Marengo is the county seat of Iowa's Iowa County. Marengo is a fine progressive community with over 2,560 residents. Our government is made up of an Administrator style with Mayor and Council representinag the Community. Iowa County is home to almost 16,000 people at this time. Interstate 80 transects the county east to west. Marengo and Iowa County is blessed with numerous industry and has a very hard working dedicated work force. The Christian Denominations represented in the city limits for worship are - First Presbyterian Church (USA), First United Methodist Church, Nazarene Church, St. Patrick's Catholic Church, and St. John's Lutheran Church (Missouri Synod). The Eastern Iowa Airport is only 25 miles away in Cedar Rapids for travel arrangements. Schools Our school is the Iowa Valley Community Schools home of the Tigers. We have some very dedicated teachers and administrators. We recently have done extensive remodeling to our High School and Elementary Buildings and have about 700 children in K-12. The community supports the school very well and awards numerous sholarships to those who want to further their education. Recently the schools upgraded the facilities and added on 2 both buildings. Geo Thermal was added to the Elementary to help save on heating and cooling costs. We are close to the University of Iowa in Iowa City and Kirkwood Community College, Mount Mercy, and Coe College in Cedar Rapids for those who wish to further their education. We have St. John Lutheran Pre School as well as a pre school through our Elementary School. Medical We have a fine Hospital which was recently remodleded and expanded which provides many clinics with great doctors. We are home to the Iowa County Ambulance service. Marengo also offers 2 Medical clinics, 2 Dentists, a Chiropractor, and a Massage Therapist. We are close to many fine large hospitals and clinics. The University of Iowa Hospitals are only 30 miles away along with Mercy Hospital and the VA hospital in Iowa City. St. Lukes and Mercy Hospitals are close at Cedar Rapids also. Recreation The Marengo Athletic Association is very active with softball, baseball, soccer, football, volleyball and other activities at the Lions Park. Marengo has an outdoor swimming pool. We are also home to the Iowa County 4-H Fair every year. We have a very well maintained 9 hole golf couse south of town. Iowa is home to more golf courses per capita than any other state in the Country. We are in a heart of the state for many of those. Gateway Park Gateway Park on the north end of Marengo consists of 131 acres adjouning the Iowa River. The Gateway Park is being developed for fishing with over 40 acres of water. There are 2 ponds for fishing and one of those has stocked with over 400 lbs of catfish by the DNR. There is a boat ramp to the Iowa River for those who enjoy canoeing, rafting, and boating. An Arboretum is on 7 acres of the park for all to enjoy. The hiking Trail is partly completed. There are many native plant species that are planted - Prairie plants such as Big Bluestem, Little Bluestem, Wild flowers and many others. Hundreds of trees have been planted to date. There are Pergolas planned, Wild life viewing blinds and observation towers planned to view our Bald Eagles. This is the gateway to about 15,000 acres of prairie and woodlands along the Iowa River from Tama to The Amanas which the US Fish and Game has purchased. Much of this property is open to the public for hunting, fishing, or bird watching. This is one of the few birding areas designated by the state of Iowa to enjoy our song birds. The BarSan Prairie is a private Prairie on 160 acres of Farm ground that has been reestablished by the Sanderfeld Family. It is located south east of Marengo 4 miles. Iowa County is also home to other prairie sites that have been rehabilitated. We are also home to some of Americas premier Hunting. We have some of the best Pheasant hunting in the country. Along with Whitetail Deer, Turkey, Rabbit, Squirrel, Various Geese, Ducks, and other game. Other wildlife in Iowa County are River Otters, Beaver, Bald Eagles, Bobcat, Coyote, Fox, Hawk, Owls, Grouse, Partidge, Quail, Raccoon, Opposum, American Kestrels, and Various song birds. If you enjoy the outdoors there is much to enjoy in Iowa's Iowa County. Retail There is a nice variety of stores in town and Iowa County. The Big G grocery store is a great grocery store and the family which owns it is very supportive of the community. There are 2 hardware stores in town with one offering rental of equipment and tools. 3 Quick stop gas stations. Several fine restaurants are available. Full service gas station, many beauty shops, car parts store, body shops, cleaners, auto dealer, 2 banks, lawn mower dealer, Florist, 3 good restaurants, and many others. Iowa County is also home to Tanger Outlet Mall and home to Iowa's #1 tourist attraction in the Amana Colonies. Only 30 miles away are other malls and shopping located in Cedar Rapids and Iowa City. Housing Marengo offers a wide variety of affordable housing. The City also offers a Tax Abatement plan for new Housing and remodeling which gives the owner a discount on their property taxes for 5 years which reduces the property tax by about half. Culture and Entertainment-The Amanas Marengo is only 10 minutes from Iowa's premier Tourist Attraction, The Amanas. You can enjoy the Historic Seven Amana Colonies which are on the National Register of Historic Districts. They provide new and old world charm with the German festivals that give history a personal perspective show casing many Sandstone and brick homes built before the Civil War. The Amanas offer fine dining, bakeries, wineries, and hand crafted furniture. Symphony, many museums, movies, sporting events, theatres, conventions are only as close as the Cities of Cedar Rapids and Iowa City. BELLE PLAINE AND BENTON COUNTY Belle Plaine is located in the Southwestern part of Benton County. Belle Plaine is a superb community. Belle Plaine is home to the Plainsman, Belle Plaine Community Schools. They have some great teachers and administrators.
